High above Tbilisi on Sololaki Hill stands Kartlis Deda — Mother of Georgia — a 20-meter statue of a woman in traditional Georgian dress, watching over the city she symbolizes. Created by celebrated sculptor Elguja Amashukeli and unveiled in 1958 for Tbilisi's 1500th anniversary, she holds a bowl of wine in one hand to welcome those who come as friends, and a sword in the other for those who come as enemies — a single figure embodying both Georgian hospitality and Georgian resilience. Amashukeli was awarded the Shota Rustaveli State Prize in 1966 for the work, and the statue has stood watch over the capital ever since, visible from nearly every corner of the old town.
